A series of series

Musings on my journey from writing a book to juggling two connected series of five and eight plus novels.

I am currently in the final stages of editing my first book in a series before publishing. I am also currently writing five books in a separate but connected series. In between writing, I find myself neck deep in trying to edit seven other books in the original series, (the writing of the yet unfinished book nine is currently on hold while I try to catch up) and market the one I'm about to release. If that isn't enough, after the covid lockdown and the ensuing chaos in the schools in my area, I'm also currently homeschooling my two youngest kids while trying to help the two oldest who were left behind (because dyslexia and ADHD don't fit neatly into an online classroom). Do you feel a little dizzy as you hear this list? Well whether you do or not, I sure do.
Why do I do it?
If George R. R. Martin is right about readers living a thousand lives, then in my opinion writers are the demigods who give those readers life. Readers are now no longer only those who can actually read, the popularity and accessibility of audio books has also allowed those who are too young, too busy, or have a disability (dyslexia, blindness, etc.) to explore more of what interests them. To see worlds that were inaccessible to them. To live and love in ways they never dreamed. As an author, that is my dream, my goal. To bring not just a life into this world, but to bring multiple worlds into thousands of lives.
“Life is a three ring circus where none of the performers listen to the ringmaster- yet it’s still the greatest show on earth.”
Writing a series is seeing a brand new world through the eyes of multiple people, sometimes over multiple generations. It's learning things you never imagined existed and finding joy in what you once found tedious. It's strength when you feel helpless, life when you feel like you're dying. It's an escape when you feel trapped, and comfort when you feel alone. It's seeing the unfamiliar and the nonexistent with your own eyes, and seeing the familiar through a different set of eyes. It's finding a way to wrap your mind around things you can not understand and wrap your heart around those you thought you could not help but hate.
Writing gives you a voice when you feel silenced, so let your voice and personality shine through. Choose a subject or a snippet, or even an image that inspires you, build a whole new world around it that only you can create. Add another dimension to this once flat life. Add your own color to this once drab world. Are you ready to get started?
